Preparing for Cold Season: Thermal Underwear Basics

Thermal underwear is a great solution for a cold season if the weather is harsh. There are styles for men and women and today we’ll talk about the basics of thermal underwear. What fabrics are the best and which ones are more affordable. What is thermal underwear? It is a warmth encapsulating apparel made of multiple layers of fabric that helps capture the body heat to keep you warm in the cold weather.

Thermal underwear is made of various fabrics. Wool and silk are the best fabrics for thermal underwear. They are natural and breathe well not which prevents odors from emerging. Silk can be costly but it keeps you warm and allows to stay relatively dry. Wool is a great thermal underwear fabric. It traps warmth and does not make you sweat that much. Fine wool is also smooth and doesn’t scratch skin.

Polypropylene and polyester are the synthetic fabrics that are preferred for their lower cost. These can be blended with cotton and wool but they are not that effective and tend to trap moisture and bacteria which results in odors.

Always look at the percentage of natural and synthetic fibers listed on the package before buying anything. This is one of the main thermal underwear basics. Attractive prices and labels promising pure woolen thermal underwear is most likely to turn out to be a blend where natural fibers barely make up to 10% of the apparel while the high percentage of it is made of synthetic fibers.

Try to choose thermal underwear that contains less than 20% of synthetic fibers otherwise it will not be quite effective outdoors during cold weather. Besides thermal underwear should be quite pleasant against the skin and not stick to it. And if the percentage is higher than 20 or 30 per cent the quality of thermal underwear will be…well quite synthetic.

Thermal underwear comes in a variety of styles. There are camisoles, tops and long pants are available at the market for both men and women in basic colors as well as in a range of different hues. Some of the women’s thermal underwear pieces are decorated with lace.
